Why would you choose an engineered wood flooring board over a solid wood product?
Well, there are a good few reasons that engineered wood flooring could be your choice. An engineered board is made up of a few layers of plywood, which is crisscrossed to ensure stability. It is then given the final real wood veneer. You will not be able to tell the difference between an engineered and a solid wood floor – they look exactly the same.
One of the reasons engineered wood flooring is becoming more popular is the fact they can be installed onto most subfloors, be it concrete or existing T and G, engineered will do the job. A solid wood floor is normally nailed to an existing T and G floor, plywood or osb. The beauty of an engineered board, is that it is suitable for most types of subfloor. Solid wood expands and contracts, while an engineered board will do this as well, it will not do it to the same degree.
There is such a fantastic choice of engineered products available on the market today that most finishes, widths and lengths can be sourced. One of the differences between engineered wood and solid wood is that there is much more variety in plank length and width. Given that it’s ‘engineered’ you can have a much wider and longer plank than you can with solid wood, which has its limitations.
If you are looking for a wider board then engineered will be a great choice and good on the pocket as well because, to have a solid wood in a wider width can be quite expensive compared to an engineered board. Engineered is also easier to install and comes in the original T and G, and click version (just like a laminate) As you can see engineered is indeed a great all rounder.
